Rosario ”Rosie” Josefina Ferré was born in Po

Rosario ”Rosie” Josefina Ferré was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1938. During her time @DanaHallSchool, she was her junior class vice president, a member of the varsity fencing team and involved in multiple clubs including the French Club and Current Events Club. Rosario graduated from Dana in 1956 and then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College, her master’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico and then her Ph.D from the University of Maryland. She was an avid writer from a young age and focused her studies on Latin American literature. Rosario Ferré served as the first lady of Puerto Rico from 1970 until 1972 after her mother died during her father’s term as governor. Her father, Luis A. Ferré, was a proponent of statehood, while Rosario supported Puerto Rican independence. She started “Zona de carga y descarga,” a journal featuring the work of artists and writers in support of the independence movement. She published her first collection of stories (“Papeles de Pandora”) in 1976 and her first book (“Maldito Amor”) in 1986. Rosario’s work is often regarded for its influence on the feminist movement in Puerto Rico and praised for its unique viewpoint. She often wrote in Spanish and then self-translated into English. She was also one of five finalists for the National Book Award in 1995. Rosario continued her work in literature as a visiting professor and a contributing editor for The San Juan Star. She died in 2016 at the age of 77. The Alumnae Authors Collection @DanaHallLibrary includes seven of Rosario’s books, two of which are in Spanish. From Great Danes to poodles and many in between, dogs have been part of @DanaHallSchool history since the very early days of the school’s founding. Seven out of the eleven heads of school had dogs with them during their time at #DanaHall and other furry friends have been welcomed on campus for events like Field Days. Swipe to see some more #DanaDogs >>> And visit the Danapedia (link in bio) for more information. (1) Principal Edie Phelps with her dog “Posie” in 1970. Posie attended all-school functions, faculty meetings, and graduations. In 1973, she was deemed worthy of a diploma and membership in the Cum Laude Society.
(2)Principal Sarah Eastman with “Cardigan” in 1896. The Eastman Sisters had many canine companions that participated in daily activities on campus. Another dog, “Spot” was known to sit with Miss Sarah during worship services and wait quietly until prayers had ended before running off to play.
(3)Principal Helen Temple Cooke with one of her Great Danes circa 1902. Miss Cooke had two Great Danes, named “Danae" and "Dana I."
(4) Headmistress Elaine Betts sits with “Baron” circa 1989. Baron was known to be devoted and friendly.
(5) Head of School Caroline Erisman with her two dogs, “Bunny” and “Smokey” in 2009. Although it took some time to adjust after moving from New York, these pups eventually settled in and learned to love walking around campus to meet new people.
(6) Current Head of School Katherine Bradley with her dog “Apollo” circa 2019. Apollo is a playful, friendly and sweet presence on campus.

#tbt to #Classof2012 members dressed for #SeniorSophomore @DanaHallSchool in 2009. This year’s #Classof2022 and the #Classof2024 celebrated the #DanaHall Senior-Sophomore tradition on Monday. A tradition called "Old Girl, New Girl" dates back to the early years of the school and began as a way to welcome the younger students onto campus. We believe it came to be called Senior-Sophomore in the 1930s. Nowadays, Senior-Sophomore includes posters, decorated lockers, candy, class songs, beanies, and creative costumes designed by the Seniors to be worn by the Sophomores, and a celebratory banquet at the end of the day. #Archives
