Q: Who invented cat-eye glasses? A: A Dana Hall al Q: Who invented cat-eye glasses? A: A Dana Hall alumna, of course! Altina Schinasi, born in New York City in 1907, graduated from @DanaHallSchool with the #Classof1924. Among her many activities at #DanaHall, she was Class Historian and Class Vice-President both her junior and senior years. Altina lived a creative life as an artist, inventor, designer and entrepreneur. One of her most remarkable achievements was the design and creation of the Harlequin glasses (also known as cat-eye glasses). Altina wanted to create a more stylish design than those typically found at the optician and found inspiration in the shape of harlequin masks. She patented her design in the late 1920s and by the late 1930s, Altina’s successful production of the frames and partnership with department stores saw cat-eye glasses become a true fashion accessory worn by many American women. Her revolutionary design was recognized by Vogue and Life magazine, and she also received the Lord & Taylor Annual American Design Award. Her other accomplishments included studying painting in Paris, working with artist Salvador Dalí while employed as a window dresser, producing a documentary film (George Grosz' Interregnum) and meeting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through her interest in creating a film about the March on Washington. She spent her later years creating art in New Mexico and passed away at the age of 92 in 1999. Perhaps Altina had insight into her future when she selected this quote to appear with her senior photo: “She is not in the roll of common men” (adapted from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I).
