After attending Dana Hall for two years Jeannette went to a school closer to her family. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1899, and later that year met Mary Emma Woolley, who was President of Mount Holyoke College from 1901-1937. They were in a committed relationship for 48 years. Jeannette was a Professor of English Literature at Mount Holyoke from 1901-1939, and founded a modern literature lecture series that invited published poets and authors to speak. She also was the founder of a college theatre company, and was the author of many books and plays. Marks was a member of the National Woman’s party formed in 1916 to fight for women’s suffrage. The Jeannette Marks’ Cultural Center at Mount Holyoke is named for her and provides support for LGBTQIA+ students and allies.
