An anonymous manuscript found in the Dana Hall Archives led to a story of how this Brooklyn resident and former Dana Hall student helped rally public opinion to save the life of Alice Masaryk, a Czech citizen and former social worker at Hull House in Chicago. Miss Masaryk had been imprisoned in Vienna in 1915 for trying to save her father’s library in Prague, and was at risk of execution. Miss Clark’s letter to the Brooklyn Eagle aided the appeals of American women to spare Miss Masaryk’s life. These included Jane Addams of Hull House, and Emily Balch, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Wellesley resident. Miss Masaryk’s life was saved, and in 1919 she became one of the first women elected to the Parliament of the new Czech Republic. We now know this unique document housed in our collection was written by Elizabeth Morris Clark.
