This past February, members of the Making History

This past February, members of the Making History elective spoke with three members from the Class of 1970. Similar to today’s age, the late ’60s and early ’70s were a time of immense change, and the juniors and seniors in this course heard about daily life on campus, the St. Paul’s Exchange, the political rallies that were attended by the then Dana students, favorite memories and the continued value of their Dana friendships 50 years after graduation. The class then transcribed the interviews into oral histories that will be preserved in the Archives. We are so grateful to these wonderful alumnae for participating in these interviews and contributing to our work in the Dana Hall School Archives. -L. Rashes ‘20 ⁣⁣⁣⁣

During the suffrage movement, it might be thought

During the suffrage movement, it might be thought that there would be many political voices active on campus at an all-girls institution like Dana Hall. However, we discovered there were few references to political activities during this time period in the records. Most mentions of suffrage can be found in yearbooks from 1912-1925, specifically in the “Prophecy” sections, which included visions of the future about members of the graduating class. The prophecies predicted classmates occupying the “president’s chair” and mayoral offices. The 1918 yearbook also mentions students working “for the cause of the Suffrage Republican Party with her aide, Nora Johnston (Class of 1918), whose delightful intonation wins for her party many followers.” From these prophecies, we know that some students were aware of the movement, and even envisioned some of their classmates participating and benefiting from the suffrage movement. -C. The Making History elective allows students to exp

The Making History elective allows students to explore Dana Hall history and conduct research on a topic of their choice. This year’s students gained hands-on experience with primary sources as they investigated their topics in the Dana Hall School Archives. During this last week of school, we are celebrating all of their impressive work with #DanaHallHistoryWeek!
