#tbt to Miss Helen Temple Cooke seated on the Grov #tbt to Miss Helen Temple Cooke seated on the Grove House porch @DanaHallSchool in 1935. This past Tuesday was Helen Temple Cooke’s 156th birthday! Born on April 13, 1865 in Rutland, Vermont, Miss Cooke served and guided the Dana Hall community for almost 56 years. In 1898, when the Eastman Sisters were looking to retire, Miss Cooke was in a privileged position to purchase the school with financial assistance from Rutland businessman Marcellus Wheeler. Throughout her tenure, she worked tirelessly to execute her vision for Dana Hall. Her accomplishments include founding three more schools (Tenacre, Dana Junior and Pine Manor) to form the Dana Hall Schools, expanding the physical campus to include 70 buildings on approximately 100 acres and establishing several of the school traditions and activities that continue to this day. She outfitted her schools with antiques, rugs and art to expose the students to beauty, and expand their minds. Miss Cooke also invited many distinguished visitors to campus to speak and share their knowledge, talents and experiences with students. After retiring, Miss Cooke lived just up the hill behind campus in her home called Shamballah and continued to be involved with school life as President of the Board of Trustees. She died on the eve of her 90th birthday in 1955. Happy Birthday Miss Cooke! We’re grateful for your enduring legacy, and the Dana Hall Library is proud to bear your name. #HelenTempleCookeLibrary #HTCLibrary #DanaHall #Archives
